Some Fine-Tuning
November 17, 2003
This represents the 41st entry in this blog, and it has now been in existence for almost three months. I began the blog with the idea that my current primary Web site does not manage to reflect my recent professional activity. Three months into it, I do think the blog is fulfilling that goal—it does reflect the bulk of my recent activity. There is one irony, though, which I am sure is not unique to me—the busier I am, the less time I have to work on the blog.
A few observations thus far. Please post a comment or email me directly with your thoughts.
- People do seem to be reading it. I am not getting many comments, but I am hearing through other channels (mainly email) that people are reading it. I also have significantly higher traffic now, though I am not sure how to interpret all of the changes--hits vs. page views vs. sessions. In general, the site is 3-4 times busier than it had been.
- I have done little to the original Movable Type template that I use. A few readers have picked up on this, pointing out that it looks a lot like other MT-driven sites. As I said recently to one thoughtful reader, this is likely not going to change much; I don't have much of an eye for graphic design.
- I have just added one new feature, which is to archive and list the entries by category. This shows up as a small navigational feature on the left-hand side of the Index page. My thanks to Jesse Ruderman for sharing the code snippet for this feature.
- I've worked with a lot of template-driven content management technologies, but I have to admit to having a soft spot for Movable Type. I will avoid saying much more, for fear of jinxing my site.
