ftp, secure shell

December 29, 2004

Can folks suggest a tool or tools that would help me (1) do ftp back and forth to a couple of web sites and (2) run a secure shell to my primary web site (which runs linux). I would want to run this on a couple of PCs, one of which is currently running Windows 2000, and another which is running XP.

I have been playing with CuteFTP for a couple of days, and like it. On the shell side of things, I have used something called AbsoluteTelnet. Both of these are still on their trial period, and seem ok, but I am open to suggestions.

And, silly question perhaps, but why isn’t this sort of thing simply built into Windows? I was trying to run FTP on my XP machine through a DOS box, and I kept getting bad connections, etc.

Thanks,

Bill

I'm using an earlier version of this: http://www.ssh.com/products/tectia/

I've had decent results with it as both an FTP program and a secure shell. Well, actually there was an annoying bug with the FTP that did cause me to lose some data (overwriting files with the same name in different directories). I would hope they've fixed it up by now.

For plain 'ol FTP, you can use IE.

I like F-Secure SSH

If the server has SSH, you should be looking for an SFTP client. MUCH safer.

I understand WinSCP and Filezilla are good.

Try PuTTY and pscp http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/putty/

I also used to use an FTP-like front end called iXplorer. This program now comes in a shareware Pro version that includes PuTTY with the download. http://www.i-tree.org/secixpro/index.htm

There's also a free GPL version (http://www.i-tree.org/gpl/ixplorer.htm ) that has less features etc.

For unsecure FTP I still prefer WSFTP.
